Update to Projects List

After a power failure, my storage server (Running FreeNAS – an Open Source FreeBSD based file server), failed with no backup or restore to be found I had it configured just the way it needed to be and served us well. To make a long story short I reinstalled the OS partition and exported the XML config file, so it can be rescued back to the current state. All is well in the server room again, but this has left me uneasy about using FreeNAS. Don’t get me wrong, a 32MB OS that serves over a terabyte of data for 209 days straight, not to mention free, is decent in its own right, but lacks any real console functionality (it’s all a PHP webGUI) leaves me eyeing Fedora 10…………. My guess is something was corrupt and did not run until reboot.

Upcoming projects: (While I continue to search for a job.)

IIS 6 and 7
• Networking: DNS, DHCP, QoS – Mostly in Cisco CCNA books
• Packages to reflash router
• Running Apache on Linux for web serving, WebDAV and CalDAV
• SMTP Mail Servers, Print Servers
• Disk partitioning agents (Splitting my 160GB in half for a Vista Install)
• Developing plans to build new server with hardware I already own, learning new useful skills to make it the most useful. Most likely being a Fedora 10 machine.
• Since FreeNAS server issues, get more familiar with FreeBSD as I am considering migrating my data to a Fedora 10 Install as well.
• Moving older critical data from current storage server to static media, clearing out space, making any reconfiguration easier.
• Begin to bring structure and order to my server room

All of which must be done for little to no cost. (No income has made me quite resourceful, if nothing else.) More to come…….. Oh and happy 2009 from Burris Engineering.
